What PayPal says about phone numbers

PayPal's multi-factor help asks you to keep “your current telephone (mobile and/or landline) number” on file. It says a one-time passcode can go out “by SMS, WhatsApp to your mobile phone number, or via phone call to your landline, or by email” (PayPal).

That's the opposite of a mobile-only rule. A landline is expected, not tolerated. The word VoIP doesn't appear in any of the PayPal articles we read, and we won't guess at a rule PayPal hasn't published. What it does ask is practical: “Check that your cellphone provider can receive SMS OTP.”

When the text doesn't come

1. 01Wait the 90 seconds. PayPal asks you to “wait at least 90 seconds (about 1 and a half minutes) for the code to come through before trying again”. Tapping resend five times doesn't make it faster.
2. 02Look at the message, not the sender. PayPal notes that “The code is in the body of the text and not the 725-729 from PayPal number.” The sender is a short code. Your six digits are in the text.
3. 03Re-add the number. PayPal's first suggestion for missing texts is re-adding your phone number in Settings, and choosing which number gets the text if you have more than one (PayPal).
4. 04Ask your carrier about short codes. PayPal says to “contact your mobile phone carrier and ask them to turn on short-code text messaging”.
5. 05Pick another route. If the app prompt doesn't work either, PayPal says to click “Login using other ways” on the web screen and choose another challenge.

Sometimes PayPal wants a reply, not a code

Not every PayPal text has a code in it. Its help says “We may send you a text asking you to confirm your activity (by replying 1 for yes or 2 for no)”. That needs a number that can send a text back. Worth knowing before you move PayPal to any receive-only number, a Cleat line included.

Take the phone out of it

PayPal publishes more alternatives than most services. Set one up the day things work, not the day they don't.

• A passkey. PayPal's advice is to “Create a passkey to log in the same way you unlock your device with a passkey.”
• An authenticator app. “You can set up 2-step verification using an authenticator app (like Google authenticator and Microsoft authenticator.)” (PayPal)
• The PayPal app. Choose “Confirm using PayPal app” and a push notification goes to the phone you usually use.
• A remembered device. Once PayPal has confirmed it's you on a browser or phone, “the device works as one of the two factors needed for MFA”. You'll see fewer codes there.

When a real mobile line is the answer

If the number on your PayPal account is gone for good, or it's an internet number that PayPal's texts don't reach, you need a new number that gets texts. Have it ready before you start: when you add a mobile number, PayPal texts a confirmation code, and “For security reasons, the code expires in 15 minutes from the time it's issued” (PayPal).

If you're abroad

PayPal lists WhatsApp as a way to get a passcode to your mobile number, and email too. If you're travelling with your US SIM switched off but WhatsApp still running on Wi-Fi, or you just have your email, those are the options to look for on the verification screen. Better still, set up a passkey before you fly.
