Does Cash App accept VoIP numbers? Two help centers, two different answers

Cash App Taxes' help center has an article dated Oct 18, 2021. It says: “We do not support non-fixed VoIP phone numbers such as Google Voice or Skype.” Then: “You will need to use a US-based mobile or home phone number for phone verification.” (Cash App Taxes)

Three things to notice. It's the Taxes product's help, at taxeshelp.cash.app. It's about phone verification there, not about signing in to Cash App. And “home phone number” means a landline is fine for Taxes. The rule is aimed at internet numbers like Google Voice, not at anything that isn't a mobile.

What the main Cash App help says

Nothing about VoIP, on the articles we read. It says “Every time you sign in to your Cash App account, you're sent a one-time-use login code.” (Cash App). On the web you enter the phone number on your account, then “Input the confirmation code sent via text or email” (Cash App).

Whether the payments app treats internet numbers the way Taxes does, Cash App doesn't say. So we won't either. What the main help does make clear is that the phone isn't your only way in.

When the code doesn't come

1. 01Use email. If there's an email on your account, this is the quickest fix. The web login offers it right under the phone field: “Select Use email to log in with your email instead”.
2. 02Check it's the right number. Cash App's own first explanation for being locked out is that “your account might have been created using a different phone number or email address.” If you changed numbers recently, “you will need to sign in using the phone number or email connected to the account” (Cash App).
3. 03Use your passkey, if you set one up. On the web, after entering your number: “When prompted, confirm using your passkey”.
4. 04Recover inside the app. Log out, tap the “...” icon at the top right, choose “I need help logging in”, then “Complete any of the prompts to confirm and verify your account”.

When a real mobile line is the answer

Say your Cash App number is a Google Voice number, the codes stopped, and there's no email on the account. Once you're back in, putting a real mobile line on the account is the sensible move.
