Does Chime accept VoIP numbers? What Chime's help says, and what it doesn't
For a lot of people Chime is the bank account, which makes a missing code feel worse. It's payday, a bill is due, and the app wants six digits that aren't coming. Here's what Chime publishes, and nothing it doesn't.

What Chime says
Chime describes two-factor authentication as “a quick second step when you sign in with a password, like a code sent by text message or a phone call” (Chime). It's a switch in Security Center. You can also turn on “Always require two-factor authentication”. Leave it off and you may still see it: “Chime may also require 2FA for logins we identify as risky.”
Nothing about number type. We read Chime's Security Center and code-troubleshooting articles and found no mention of VoIP, Google Voice, prepaid plans or landlines. If someone tells you Chime's definite rule, they're guessing. A Chime article about losing access to your number returned a not-found page when we tried it, so it isn't quoted here.
The short code is usually the problem
Chime's troubleshooting list is really about one number, 24463 (Chime):
- Right phone? “Confirm the phone number you’re checking matches the phone number associated with your Chime account.” Obvious, until you have two phones.
- Opted out? If you ever stopped Chime's texts, text START to 24463 to opt back in.
- Blocked? “Make sure that our notification number 24463 is not on your blocked contacts list.”
- Your plan. Ask your carrier whether it takes short-code or premium messages, and whether it can “receive texts from other six-digit numbers from other institutions”.
That last one is where cheaper plans and internet numbers tend to fall down. Chime doesn't say this is about VoIP. It points you at your carrier, which is the right place to ask.
If the number itself is gone
Chime's help: “If you no longer have access to the phone number associated with your Chime account, tap Update phone number under Need help? when you’re on the verification screen.” Have the new number ready before you tap it, on a phone or line that can get texts from 24463. If the app won't let you through, the same page lists Chime's Member Services line, open 24/7.
Set up a passkey while things work
“A passkey lets you sign in with your phone’s Face ID, Touch ID, fingerprint, or device PIN instead of typing a password, on supported devices.” Chime says it ties sign-in to your device and helps against phishing. One requirement: “Make sure your phone’s screen lock is on if you plan to use a passkey.”
Chime describes 2FA as a second step when you sign in with a password, and a passkey replaces the password. Chime doesn't spell out whether a passkey sign-in can still ask for a code, so keep your number current anyway.
When a real mobile line is the answer
If your number on Chime is an internet number and texts from 24463 never land, moving to a real mobile line is the practical fix. Your own carrier line first. Why line type decides whether a code arrives explains the checks many services run.
A Cleat line is a real US mobile number, not VoIP, for $24.99 a month. It receives texts, and since Chime mentions phone calls too, it's worth knowing that incoming calls on a Cleat line arrive as transcripts. What each kind of verification call expects explains why that matters. Two limits: it's receive-only, so you can't text START to 24463 from it, and no provider can promise Chime accepts any given number.
If you're abroad
Chime's help pages we read don't cover signing in from outside the US. The practical problem is simple: swap to a local SIM and your US number stops getting texts from 24463. Set up a passkey before you leave, and keep a US number that can still receive texts. How people living abroad handle this.
Questions
Does Chime say it blocks VoIP numbers?
No. Chime's Security Center and code-troubleshooting articles don't mention VoIP, Google Voice or landlines. It describes codes by text message or phone call.
Why isn't my Chime verification code arriving?
Chime's texts come from 24463. Check it isn't blocked, text START to it if you opted out, and ask your carrier whether your plan receives short-code messages.
I don't have the phone number on my Chime account anymore.
On the verification screen, tap Update phone number under Need help?. If that doesn't work, contact Chime's Member Services, which is open 24/7.
Will a Cleat line work with Chime?
It's a real US mobile line, not VoIP, and it can receive both texts and transcribed calls. But Chime publishes no rule on number type, and no provider can promise acceptance. Try it in your first month.
