What Coinbase says about text codes

From its current setup page: “Text message (SMS) is the default 2-step verification method. It's the least secure option. We recommend adding more methods for better security.” (Coinbase)

An older article filed under Coinbase Pro, still online, gives the reason. SMS is “linked to a phone number”, so it can “leave you susceptible to phone number porting attacks” (Coinbase Pro FAQ).

What Coinbase doesn't say, on any page we read, is anything about VoIP. The one number-type statement is about calls: “For security purposes, Coinbase does not support the delivery of 2-factor authentication (2FA) codes via voice call.” (Coinbase Pro). That article is aimed at people with a landline on their account, and it tells them to recover the account and switch to an authenticator.

When the SMS code doesn't come

1. 01Wait 30 seconds, then resend once. “If you don’t receive a 6-digit SMS code when expected, wait 30 seconds and select Resend code.” (Coinbase)
2. 02Then stop pressing it. The older Pro troubleshooting page warns that “After several requests to resend the SMS code, our system may temporarily stop sending them as a security measure.” It also says codes “can take up to 60 minutes to arrive”, and that requesting them back to back can invalidate the ones on their way (Coinbase Pro).
3. 03Try another way. “If one method fails, select Try another way and choose an alternate method.” A push notification to the Coinbase app, a passkey, a security key or a backup code all skip the text, if you set them up earlier.
4. 04New SIM, same number? Coinbase says your mobile provider “may be able to move your original phone number to your new SIM”. Call your carrier before you start a recovery.

If the number is gone for good

Coinbase: “If you can no longer receive SMS codes to your registered number, you’ll need to recover your account through coinbase.com. This can’t be done in the mobile app and must be completed in a browser.” During recovery, “You may be asked to verify your identity using a government-issued ID or other identity information.” (Coinbase)

So find a computer, have your ID nearby, and expect it to take a while. When it's done, Coinbase lets you move 2-step verification to a new phone number, a passkey or an authenticator app. Pick one of the last two.

Set up something that isn't a phone number

Coinbase's own reason for passkeys and authenticator apps: they “aren’t tied to your phone number, so you won’t lose access if you change or lose it.” Its recommended setups:

• Two security keys, one as the backup. Coinbase calls this the highest security.
• A passkey plus a security key, so losing your phone doesn't lose the account.
• A passkey plus push notifications, if you don't want to buy a key.
• An authenticator app. “Coinbase supports all authenticator apps, including Duo, Google Authenticator, and Microsoft Authenticator.”

Coinbase also lets you name trusted contacts who can approve an account recovery. Its warning is worth repeating: only invite people you actually know, because anyone asking to be your trusted contact is likely a scammer.

When a real mobile line is the answer

Honestly, less often than on the other services we've covered. It fits when SMS stays on your Coinbase account as a backup and you want that backup on a number you won't lose to a SIM swap at the shop, a cancelled plan, or a move. Why line type matters covers how services check numbers.

A Cleat line is a real US mobile number, not VoIP, for $24.99 a month. It receives texts. Its call transcripts won't help here, because Coinbase doesn't send codes by voice call. And no provider can promise Coinbase accepts a particular number. What people use a US line for.

If you're abroad

The older Pro troubleshooting page makes the case for authenticator apps better than we can: use one instead, “since they don't require internet connectivity or SMS coverage”. On a foreign SIM or patchy roaming, that's the method to set up before you leave, not after the text fails to show.
