Walmart Seller Center asks for a code every single time you log in
A seller account you log into daily is a different problem from one you verify once. Walmart's documentation is clear about which kind it is, and that decides whether the number behind it can be one person's phone.

Every login, not just new devices
Walmart Marketplace Learn, on 2-step verification
“If you choose to verify by text, you'll be asked to enter a one-time verification code that will be sent to the phone number associated with your account each time you login into Seller Center.”

The troubleshooting guide says the same thing without the conditional: “If 2-step verification is enabled for your Seller Center account, you'll need to enter a one-time verification code every time you log in”, and “This code is valid for 10 minutes” (Walmart). No “remember this device” option appears anywhere in Walmart's documentation.
That is the fact that matters commercially. If the codes go to one person's handset, that person is a dependency on every listing change, every order issue and every price update, every day. It is the single clearest case in this section for a number the team can read.
What Walmart publishes about the number
No VoIP rule, no landline rule, no virtual-number rule. The only constraint on the number itself is geographic: “Text authentication is available to sellers with U.S., Mexico, Chile and Canada phone numbers” (Walmart). If your number is outside those four, an authenticator app is the route Walmart leaves you.
Walmart is relaxed about which app: “All authentication apps are compatible with Seller Center, so you can choose the app you prefer”, naming “Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator and for desktop users, Authy by Twilio” as examples (Walmart).
Every user sets up their own
Two-step verification is per person, not per seller account: “Each individual user on your Seller Center account will need to set up their preferred authentication method”, and “Once 2-step verification is set up, all users on the account will be prompted to choose an authentication channel the next time they log into Seller Center” (Walmart).
Users are added by an admin — “Only sellers with admin level access can add users within Seller Center” — and each gets their own credentials: “The email will include a link that the new user can use to create their account and set their password.” The roles available are “Admin, Read and Write and Read Only access” (Walmart).
So give every person their own Seller Center login. Whether more than one of them may choose the same phone number as their channel is something Walmart's documentation does not address in either direction, and this page will not guess. What it clearly supports is one account — the admin's, or the business's — whose codes land somewhere the business can see.
Changing the channel or the number
From Walmart's own FAQ on changing your preferences (Walmart):
- Select your name in the top right corner and choose My Profile.
- Under the My Profile tab, scroll to Channel for 2-step verification and select Edit.
- Confirm your identity on the existing channel before you can proceed.
- Choose your preferred verification channel.
- Enter the code you receive from the new channel and choose Verify.
You need the existing channel working to change it, which is the usual trap: move before you lose it. One thing you cannot change at all: “Because your email address represents a unique ID, you cannot change your profile's email address” (Walmart).
What happens when it goes wrong
Walmart locks the door rather than opening it: “After five failed attempts of logging into your account, it will be locked for 24 hours. After that timeframe, you can unlock your account by resetting your password” (Walmart). Its troubleshooting guide adds “we recommend trying again after 24 hours”, and if that fails, “you can select Try another way to recover your account or select the Help button in the Seller Center menu bar to contact Support” (Walmart).
Where a Cleat line fits
Squarely: a seller account whose daily codes should not depend on one person's phone, or a US marketplace run from outside the US where Walmart's four-country list rules out your local number. A Cleat line is a real US mobile number, not VoIP, held by one identity-verified person, with an inbox the whole team can read — and codes can also be pushed into a Slack or Microsoft Teams channel so the person logging in sees them where they already are. $24.99 a month, receive-only. Shared 2FA for teams is the longer version.
When Cleat is the wrong answer here
- You want to skip giving people their own logins. Walmart supports users with roles down to read-only, and one shared login is a worse setup than the free alternative.
- An authenticator app fits your routine. Walmart says all authentication apps are compatible with Seller Center, and a code from an app needs no signal at all.
- You want a second seller account. One verified person holds each line, and using it to get around a marketplace's account rules breaks their terms and ours.
- You need to be called back. The line receives only, and it cannot reach 911.

Questions
Does Walmart Seller Center accept VoIP numbers?
Walmart publishes no rule about VoIP, virtual numbers or landlines. The only limit it states on the number is that text authentication is available to sellers with US, Mexico, Chile and Canada phone numbers.
How often will Walmart text a code?
Every time you log in. Walmart's documentation says so twice and describes no trusted-device option. The code is valid for 10 minutes.
Is two-step verification per seller account or per user?
Per user. Walmart says each individual user on the account will need to set up their preferred authentication method, and all users are prompted to choose one at their next login.
What happens after failed login attempts?
Walmart locks the account for 24 hours after five failed attempts, after which you can unlock it by resetting your password.
