TikTok's codes are rare, which is exactly why losing the number hurts

Agencies run TikTok ad accounts for clients and hand them back at the end. That works until the code goes to a phone nobody at either company has any more, and TikTok's help page has no button for that.

Authorised devices: the code is rare

The effect is what you would hope: “This means you won't be required to enter a verification code when you log in to your account from that device and browser” (TikTok). TikTok publishes no periodic re-verification interval. So unlike Walmart, this is not a daily code — it is an occasional one, on a new machine or a new browser.

Rare is not the same as unimportant. A code you need twice a year is a code nobody has thought about for six months, which is precisely when the number behind it has quietly stopped working.

What TikTok publishes about number type

Nothing. No TikTok for Business help page we read mentions VoIP, virtual numbers or landlines. Even the article on codes that do not arrive says only: “Text Message: Check your text messages from known and unknown numbers” (TikTok). The methods offered are “Text Message, Email, or Authenticator App”, and TikTok's advice is to pick more than one: “We recommend setting up your 2-step verification with more than one method” (TikTok). Silence is not permission — the check still runs, and what makes a number non-VoIP explains what it looks at.

The number is also your sign-in

This is worth knowing before you attach anything. TikTok's own note on the change flow says: “This will change the phone number you use to sign in to TikTok for Business” (TikTok). The number is not only a second factor; it is an identifier on the login. Treat it as one, and keep the login itself to one person even if the codes land in a place the team can read.

Changing the number

TikTok spells the flow out, and it is a chain: you need the old number to get to the new one (TikTok).

  1. Open User Settings — Personal Info → Profile → Add Phone Number or Change Phone Number.
  2. Verify your current number by clicking Send Code.
  3. Enter the code and click Next.
  4. Enter the new phone number and country code, then click Send Code.
  5. Enter the second code and click Submit.

TikTok states the dependency itself: “Changing your phone number will require you to verify your current phone number with a verification code.” One field that never moves: “Once created, you cannot change the registered country on your TikTok for Business account” (TikTok).

The recovery gap

That is the whole documented recovery story. No recovery codes, no identity-verification form, no self-service flow. If you are a small advertiser without a named account manager, there is nothing published telling you what to do. Everything else on this page should be read in that light.

Business Center: enforced centrally, enrolled individually

An admin turns the requirement on for everybody: “Only members with Admin access can turn on 2-Step Verification for Business Center”, and “In the Security section, click Edit for 2-step verification and select Only admins or All members” (TikTok). But the factor itself is each person's: “When you set up 2-Step Verification, the members of your Business Center will sign in with their password and a second verification step.”

Members are added by email address, with roles from “Admin: Full access to all features in the Business Center” down to “Financial analyst: Can only view and download financial data”, and a Business Center “can have up to 4,000 members” (TikTok). So one number cannot be a team's second factor here either. Invite people properly and let each enrol their own.

Where a Cleat line fits

On the account that owns the ad spend, where the phone is both a sign-in identifier and the only documented way back in. A business line means the account does not quietly become the property of whoever set it up. A Cleat line is a real US mobile number, not VoIP, held by one identity-verified person, with a shared inbox so a code arriving at 2am is not one person's problem, at $24.99 a month. For agencies, Cleat for teams describes the handover that actually works: the client owns the line, invites you, and removes you at the end — which, on an account with no self-service recovery, is worth setting up before you need it.

When Cleat is the wrong answer here

  • You have already lost the number. TikTok's change flow needs a code on the old one. A new line does not solve that; a regional account manager is the only documented route.
  • You want a shared login. The phone number is a sign-in identifier on TikTok for Business. Add people to the Business Center instead, each with their own.
  • You want to open another advertiser account. One verified person per line, and using it that way breaks TikTok's terms and ours.
  • You need to reply or call. Receive-only, transcripts of incoming calls, no 911.

Questions

Does TikTok for Business accept VoIP numbers?

TikTok publishes nothing about VoIP, virtual numbers or landlines on the business help pages we read. There is no rule to point at in either direction.

How often does TikTok ask for a code?

Rarely, if you use authorised devices. TikTok lets you tick “Don't ask again for this device”, after which it says you will not be asked for a code when logging in from that device and browser.

How do I change the phone number?

From User Settings, and you need the old number: TikTok verifies the current number with a code before it will accept a new one.

What if we lose access to the number entirely?

TikTok's help page tells you to contact the client service team or account manager in your region. No self-service recovery flow is documented, which is why a second method matters here more than elsewhere.
